Interview with Angelika Chilikova-Founder of clothing brand Clon8

-What & Who is Clon8?

CLON8’s name originates from the Ancient Greek word, κλών, meaning “twig”. When we think of “cloning” we think of new life, of plants, fungi and bacteria reproducing, of clonal colonies where genetically identical plants grow from a single ancestor. The number 8 is a representation of infinity.

So CLON8 represents a natural system of growth, whereby one design leads to another through the miraculous process of creativity, which allows ideas to develop in their own richness and fullness, until they take on a life of their own. This process has infinite possibilities. Therefore, CLON8 is endless.

-What is your typical day when running a brand like yours?

Every day brings something new. When you close the circle from creation and design through materials, costing, presentation and everything else involved you start the journey anew.

When running a brand, one has to be present in every field of the business; the creative side is just one part of it these days.

-To be a designer, you have to undergo a lot of struggles. What is the most difficult obstacle for you when putting together your collection?

Fashion is very competitive, and even more nowadays as the media world is increasing the speed and saturation of the market. Not only do you have to consider the business side of the industry, you have to have a brand that stands out. All of this takes time and dedication, so organising and balancing my time in order to complete the circle of an entire collection is quite challenging.

-How would you describe yourself as a person & artist?

I would share the view of a dear friend Matt Hussey (Award winning portrait photographer and journalist) on his portrait project 365.

“There's something statuesque about Angelika, unmovable and assured, that I wanted to convey. She works in a chaotic industry that is always in a state of flux, but I liked this idea that while trends come and go, Angelika, and how she sees herself, never changes. She has an unshakeable sense of self that I greatly admire.”

-Do you have a favorite designer who inspires you? Why is that?

I have always admired Yohji Yamamoto, not just as a creator but as an overall entity.

-Did you ever see yourself to be so successful in establishing a known brand?

I find my happiness in my work and aim for success, so perhaps subconsciously I can see that.

-Tell me about your latest collection. What was your vision when you created it?

Inspired by the sacred symbolism of the circle. Rich with meaning, the circle – having no beginning and no end – can be seen as representing eternity, the divine. The real beauty of the circle is that it draws us in; we are invited to enter its infinite boundary to stand within its sacredness.

-Who excites you the most (Celebrity) & why?

We had the pleasure to dress recently the iconic Rossy de Palma. For me she is a Woman with capital W. I am fascinated with her dynamic personality and character.

-How is your brand different from any other designer brands?

A myriad of black garments epitomise CLON8’s style.

Elegant, playful, happy – for me there are different emotions through the darkness of black. The clothes sum up effortless expression yet project a certain minimalistic functionality.

-What are your world-dominating goals for Clon8?

Currently we working on new, exiting collaborations and looking forward to presenting Clon8 accessory line.
